The Urban Dead – A Massive Web-Based Online Role-Playing Game

I’ve been playing UD for almost three months now and I have to say it’s still fun. Slow-paced, yet with that nice sense of dread, which does befit a zombie-themed game. You can play survivor or zombie, so it’s one of those few games where a kill is always a PK (player kill), and yes, zombies can attack zombies and survivors can attack survivors. This again, is very fitting for a zombie-themed game, as zombies ultimately win in a zombie movie primarily because the survivors fight each other.

Since you like UD you’ll love Outbreak, which another game very much like UD in style, but in plot is like a multiplayer DOOM for your browser. Outbreak is at http://www.outbreakgame.com/

Because Scumm games rocked, and a dedicated emulator like this kicks ass.

The Grand DARPA Challenge

$1 million is at stake for 20 teams that built autonomous vehicles to navigate the desert on a 210-mile race from Barstow to Primm.

Who will win?

Qualifying rounds are still going on this week at the California Motor Speedway in Fontana, along with an exhibit showcasing the roboticized vehicles and pure robots entered in the race.

You can also drive on over to the start and finish line on the day of the race.. though since the race is across the desert and has no track (each vehicle figured out their own course), the only real-time status updates will be online here: Live Updates.

Too bad the Touareg didn’t come out sooner to battle it out with CalTech’s automoated Chevy Tahoe.

Well, that was sad. 5% course completion, all robots disabled. Ah, well.

List of Anime Television Series

A nice little list sorted by title. No search functions but it does have the Japanese and English names listed (unless the English name was titled by the Philippines like “Nobody’s Child”, then it’s almost impossible to figure out what the original title was).

The Baen Free Library

Science fiction novels available free on the web as a way to introduce obscure (and not so obscure) writers to the general public. And according to Eric Flint (whose novel 1632 I enjoyed when I bought it on a whim last year) the availability of his stories free on the web have done nothing but bolster sales of his books… and quietly hints that the music industry should perhaps take note.
