I enjoyed it. I didn’t really like how it turned into a shoot-em-up in the end, and one with a little awkward pacing, but on the whole I enjoyed it. Certainly, it makes humanity look like a bunch of fucktards, but as a whole, our xenophobia does make us into a bunch of fucktards, so it’s not like the mirror’s lying.
Aside from being a straightforward allegory to the apartheid actions in South Africa concerning a place called District Six, the main character in the movie, Wikus, is to me, for all intents and purposes, representative of our human race. When happy and content and in a position of dominance, he is affable and awkward. When under duress, he thinks only of his own survival and a return to how things were when he was happy, but exposure to the life outside his own gives him empathy and understanding, but does not rid him of his desires and self-interest. The way this inner conflict plays out was much more fun to see than the resulting gun battle that inevitably resulted from his decisions.
