Beowulf

Actually, Beowulf is a solid epic style movie, and Angelina Jolie is for me the worst part.

The accuracy of the story to the epic poem is pretty damn high; the juxtaposition of Beowulf telling a story as told in the poem and the contradicting visuals that tell how it actually happened are rather brilliant.

Watching it in 3D certainly helps to enjoy some of the more action-oriented parts, but the story itself works for me. It’s not the most personable, nor is it endearing (Beowulf is an ass), but see, that’s what’s great about it, it is a modernization of an epic poem that keeps itself thematically in tune with that epic poem.

Gone Baby, Gone

Great movie. You can see parts where Ben Affleck’s trying a bit too hard behind the camera, but all in all a great movie. The entire feel of it is noir, and I like noir. This one I’d see full price.

Bee Movie

Why is it when you anthropomorphize things and make them snarky and witty and knowledgeable about certain things in human culture you still gotta go for the gag where they don’t know what a tennis ball is or … oh… I don’t know… GLASS?

Movie’s got enough visual prettiness and expressive dialogue that the kids’ll love it. Me? I was perplexed. The plot was… well, it was stupid. Only the situations were amusing (and Chris Rock gets me vote for best cameo). It just wasn’t all there for me.

Wait for it to show on cable, or if you have a free slot on your Netflix/BB account and you’ve got HD, it might be pretty to watch on your HDTV.

American Gangster

It’s a good movie, but it’s not a definitive masterpiece. I suppose this is what I was expecting, considering the stars and the director. That I saw a good, possibly great movie instead shouldn’t mean that it sucks — it just didn’t meet expectations.

Matinee, though frankly, I’d just Netflix it.
