But there’s no sense crying over every mistake.

You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

The Kingdom

Good techno-thriller with some CSI crap in the front because people like that shit nowadays. It doesn’t aspire to be world rocking, though it does leave you with a sense of hopelessness and sadness, given the final words spoken by both sides. A little ludicrous, though, how an investigative team turns into Deltas Force in the last thirty minutes, but hey, it’s the movies.

Worth a look, and even worth full ticket price if you like Tom Clancy-esque thrillers.

Into the Wild

Yeah, so I’m in the camp that thought this dude was a bit of an idiot about how he went about living in Alaska. That said, this is a pretty good movie. Sean Penn manages to keep a loner movie going with voice-over commentary without making it feel like a documentary. Great moments, great imagery… I’m just not sold on the ending. It’s one of those things where you know it’s a true story but that maybe it’d've been better if it was an adaptation with a better movie ending.

I know that sounds very American of me, asking for a “”happy”" ending… but really, the revelations the main character had pointed to something, and that he didn’t make it, that he realized the point of living only when he no longer could… well, it just didn’t jive for me. Maybe if the lives he touched were touched upon more, so that they live better lives because of him? I don’t know… for me the story is hampered by its source, and it would have possibly been a great, uplifting movie were it an adaptation rather than a true account.

coincidentally, last night, i was looking for something to read after finishing amy tan’s “saving fish from drowning” and picked up “into the wild” from leroy’s bookcase. just finished it, and while i would not be as harsh to judge someone an idiot, he certainly wasn’t prepared. hubris, as the author called it. i’m glad the movie doesn’t change the ending into a happy one. sean penn’s adaptation already seems more one-sided than the novel, taking the romantic view to hollwood proportions. then again, we could all use a little thoreau, london, and muir in our lives.

3:10 to Yuma

I never saw the original but now that I’ve seen this, I’m certainly adding it to my NetFlix queue. This one is good. It’s simple, straightforward, honest, insert-synonym. It brings back the Western genre, updates it a little, but keeps to its roots. In other words, it’s not revisionist a la Unforgiven. I liked it.

Shoot ‘Em Up

A pretty stupid action movie with barely any action worth mentioning. I mean, yeah, lots of bullets flying and lots of people dying, but that’s quantity — the quality is definitely lacking.

The less said about the plot the better.
