Went to the eye doctor yesterday?

Went to the eye doctor yesterday and had my peepers examined, pupil dilation and everything.

The end result? Prescription unchanged, no astigmatism. -0.75/-0.75. Awesome.

War of the Worlds

Fairly faithful to the original source by H.G. Wells… too faithful, in fact, that it should have been a period piece set in the turn of the century rather than a modern-day version.

Enjoyable, entertaining, but to be honest, aside from a few really good scenes, not up to Spielberg’s previous work.

March of the Penguins

Great cinematography and the penguins are delightful, if a bit repetitive in that their entire breeding cycle appears to be long periods of nothing interrupted repeatedly by brief periods of certain death.

Seriously, how the hell does this species keep up a zero-sum game?

Bewitched

Just like Howl’s, interesting characters in a plotless story.

I love Nicole Kidman, I can’t help but think she’s gorgeous, and she’s absolutely delightful in this movie. Will Ferrell? He’s good, too. And yet, you can only do so much with a story that just doesn’t go anywhere.

I mean, holy crap, Shirley Maclaine and Michael Caine are great in their roles and they had a nice little subplot going, but it never resolves. Ever.

As for the main plot, it can’t figure out where to go, what to do, and in the end, just ends.

It’s like the end of Sleepless in Seattle or When Harry Met Sally, only it’s the entire movie.

Howl’s Moving Castle (Dubbed)

Even in Japanese I bet this movie can’t hide the fact that for all of Miyazake’s talents this story simply ends stupidly after doddering about uncertain of its own plot.

Yes, the characters are interesting and the visuals are fantastic, but that doesn’t save this from being disjointed and disappointing.

Chez Mimi

The office had dinner here to say adieu to a co-worker. It was positively French-tastic. And that’s coming from someone who was dining at Le Procope in St. Germain, Paris only a few short weeks ago.

The pat? was good, but the mustard chicken was excellent. Horribly bad for you, you can feel your arteries closing yada yada yada, but I’d be hard pressed not to order it again when (when, not if) I go there again.

Batman Begins

Batman: Year One gets adapted into a movie. Excellent. Yes, the graphic novel by Frank Miller is very different; after all, the perspective is primarily Gordon’s and is full of these nice single panel scenes that honestly wouldn’t go well in a movie (unless it’s as inevitable as, say, Star Wars Episode III, where short 10 second scenes over and over again are par for the course). Allusion/homages to the source material are present, which are nice touches, but don’t make such an impact as to deter from the plot of the movie, which surprisingly is more expansive.

This is a must-see movie, a must-see-more-than-once movie, even. It is excellent, and here’s hoping Nolan and crew get together soon to continue this cycle.

Han and I have gone totally nerdy on this already, discussing possible story directions, etc. I won’t bore you with the details. They’re pretty geeky.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith

A nice, fun movie that kept me very entertained. Sure, it’s popcorn, but it’s buttery-good popcorn.
